Review: www.missionenvironment.com

http://www.missionenvironment.com

So in response to all of the global warming issues and news, I decided to make a website on this topic. After tons of redesigning, I thnk I got it nearly perfect now.

I want reviews and suggestions on everything, including color, layout, content, etc. Thanks!

Looks nice and clean, as well as easy to navigate. The copyright symbol is not displaying correctly at the bottom of the page though, try using © instead.

The colors are not too bad. They could use some rethinking though.

The aligning isn't perfect; the left navigation bar should be margined a couple of pixels away from the header, just like the content section.

Consider a light background. It might make it more peacefull.

The © replacement was already mentioned.

Dont see this as an offense, it's just a little critique. I want you to keep up the good work, I see you are really trying, and doing pretty good.

1) I tried experimenting with new bg colors, but couldnt find one I was crazy about. What would you suggest?

2) I moved the menu down a little. The way I coded the site though, the menu bg still goes to the top. Should I change this? Or is it fine?

3) The © did not work. I have a feeling it is cause I use strict w3 coding. What else should I try?

Please, keep the critiques coming!

Its a good idea but you need more contents. I'm happy with the colours, personally.

Its a good basic design to build on. I won't mention the errors pointed out above.

All the best with the site.

There is a page shift, the home and resources pages shift to the left comparative to the other pages. Could put some padding in the Top Story box for the image and again on the text. Other than that, it looks pretty clean and easy to navigate. Using Firefox.

Put in a new hover color, but thinking about a few more color scheme changes.

What do you guys think about adding google's adsense to this site? Would it take away from the legitimacy of the site? I honestly just want to pass along good information to people, but money is short these days, and I just cannot keep paying for hosting and domain fees, so I need to make some income from this site. I am waiting for my PR to jump so I can put TLA on here. So, shoudl I or should i not put adsense on here?

I like the design and the clean layout. The fruit photo you are using have a "healthy" and nice look. But - I think you should use a more dramatic approach to engage your visitors. For instance by using an un-healthy photo stating the seriousness of the environmental situation. Then lead your visitors to the next section "how to take action" then "why take action" and so on.

I also think the site should have a newsletter sigh up for the visitors who wants to do something. Its a great concept you can develop to infinity

Good luck.

I agree with bizman, the banner may want an exciting change.
I like the fruit and the 13 ways
Yes a proper placed Google ad won't distract (keyword, proper)
good site idea and ads for the products you recomment (lights, insulation, etc.) would be ok if properly placed.
hope this helps falcon

Very, very nice topic/subject that should garner a lot of interest in the immediate future. Your banner on top is kind of boring and it takes up a lot of space. Maybe you should put a shocking image to get peoples attention like a big picture of the sun with ice bergs melting and maybe some dead polar bears lying around. I am not trying to be a smart **** but I think a web site about a topic that might destroy the world should have a shocking/eye catching banner. Also maybe an entire page promoting alternative energy like solar power, electric/hydrogen cars, ethanol, wind turbines. This is excellent, you could even contact some suppliers of these products and get them to put some adds on your web site. You could make a little cash and also at the same time promote efforts to help global warming. You could then re-invest the profit in your web site with powerful directory links like v7n. This site has TONS of potential in my opinion, because a lot of people really are about this topic, but there is just so much false information out there...........Also add an entire page about myths, did you know a lot of people don't even believe it is happening?

Thanks for the suggestions and support guys. I really want this site to take off because I think it has an important message. I am currently working on adding more quality content.

Where do you suggest placing adsense? I was thinkin to put it in the bottom of the index page right under the "our mission" and "recent headlines"?

I think you have the community behind you, try different places and ask their opinion, they will tell you. Also don't forget methain (not sure of spelling) also called swamp gas,as an alternate fuel. It was used as an axperiment in LA where the 5 meets the Hollywood freeway, and the methain from Bradley dump supplied 4 generators that provided all the electricity needed to a large housing project. Advantages cost less and had less polution. Why they quit is beyond me. It was projected to last 100 yrs or more. This idea could be used at most landfills and public dumps.
hope this helps

Talking Hi

Hi, it is a very nice site.

I have some remarks by the way.
1. The header image is low quality and it is in gif format, which it should not be because you are losing the quality here. Use "gif" only with picture that have less colors
2 The site colors are nice and worm.
3. The empty space on the left side under the menu looks a little weird but it is ok. You can add something there to fill the space (image, text or flash animation).
4. The height of the pages is variable, depending from the text height. You can make the page height fixed if the text is smaller. It depends from you. I think it will look better.

Everything else is great,

You can consider adding a forum to the site, it would be nice

Thank you

Due to popular demand, I installed a forum. Can you check it out and give me some feedback please? Link is http://www.missionenvironment.com/forum/ and the link has also been added to the menu.

I fixed everything except the header. I am still getting mixed reviews on how to handle the top pic and logo. I will mess around with some possible replacements, but for now it is staying.

Thanks!

Insulate Your Hot Water Heater and Pipes

Put the back of your hand against your hot water heater. If it is warm or hot, then you are wasting valuable money and resources every second. The heat that is supposed to be heating your water is leaking out of the appliance. Most insulation packages come in easy to install kits and are relitavely cheap.
#
Lower Your Hot Water Heater Thermostat

Many hot water heater manufacturers set their water heaters to 140ºF before shipping them out of the factory. This not only reduces the life of your hot water heater, it wastes energy. It could also be a health hazard by making you suseptible to burns and scalding from hot water. Having your hot water heater set to anything higher the 120ºF is a waste of energy and money. 115ºF - 120ºF will do just fine for most homes.

You may want to add a solar heater as an auxilary to the hot water heater, sometimes (depending on the area that you live) it is all you need to heat water in the summer. I live in the south west of the US and some people use this method, and during the summer, it is all they need, saves energy and power bills.
hope this helps

Your top banner could have pictures of the windfarms at Tahachipi (wind generators) it might give it a little more action.

Yes also do a search "free public domain pictures" and if specified in use information that says you can use under these conditions, you can use them also. Many US gov. pictures are in the public domain (free to use) be sure to check use policy

You may want to add some information about evaporative coolers. The new models are more efficient and the two stage are a replacement for Air conditioning in some areas. Arizona (state government) has the best information on them and cost comparisons between them and air conditioning. Also they have a section on maintenance.
hope this helps
