Where The Great Writers At?
Is there a secret place where all the great writers are hiding? I tried looking on oDesk and Elance, but it was either; - poor writing skills and very cheap or
- a great writer, but just too expensive
What to do, what to do? How much do you pay for a well written 500 word article?

Define the cheap and expensive limits, in order we could understand you properly

They're over at Constant Content and Demand Studios. These sites only hire quality writers. With odesk or elance, there are just as many bad writers as good ones, maybe even more. So if you really want quality content, go to the two sites I mentioned.

Any idea offhand what the eligibility criteria on the two sites may be to qualify as a writer?

I have tried buying a few articles and they are always poorly written, or just do not make sense. You are much better off writing your own articles unless you are one of the new and upcoming webmasters that knows nothing about his websites niche, and there are plenty of those about lol

Great writers are hard to find. I'm not saying I'm a 'great' writer but I used to do a lot of content writing online but then people started bidding $1 where I bid $10, it just isn't worth it anymore.
A lot of guys just go for the cheapest writer and a lot of the time, they produce crap.
Meh, I gave up on it a long time ago.

I kept going with oDesk. Lucky that I did. I found 3 really good writers who I'll be sending 2 articles each week. Persistence pays in the end

Well, to be honest, when you pay too less for article writing, the writer will produce more articles in one day. But if you are paying good money, the writer will produce less but will be conscious of not losing the job. Therefore, it is quality VS quantity.
More articles X Less rate = Desired amount
or
Less articles X More rate = Desired amount
The choice rests with you .

I personally would pay around $2.50 - $3.00 for a QUALITY article, 500+ words.

Honestly, it is hit and miss anyplace you look.
PS. also depends what you consider a quality article, and what is cheap/ expensive.
Is the quality article the one with just coherent English, or something more?
PS. I tried Textbroker, and got a writer of level 4 that mixed genders and made way too many typos. Luckily, Textbroker understood why I couldn't accept that article.

Only if you found it laying on the ground...cause nobody capable of writing one would sell it for that.

I pay around $30 to $40 for a 500+ word article and i think that's cheap for the SEO company i use when i need something written for me. Going cheap means the writer did not spend to much time in doing research on the topic to put out a quality article.
Everyone has there own opinions on how much to pay or charge for article writing but i stay clear of price's under $30.

This is about the 'right price' for a well written unique article. For all those people selling 500 word hack jobs for $3, well...you get what you pay for. I write articles for a software company and I never charge less that $30 for 500 words. No need to give away quality content.

I've been a professional writer for decades. Got my start in the news industry so I focus on writing for clients' Google News websites.
When looking for a writer, if you go to some group-writer website, that's just what you'll get. A bunch of people claiming to be writers. Deal with the writer you want on a one on one basis. Stand firm that you won't tolerate outsourcing to some country where they pay people with a bowl of rice.
The writer you choose should be able to cover informal to formal prose and more. You don't want a robot. They should also have at least one blog where they share their personal opinion on something they're actively participating in like their sport, art, or even social issues. This shows the person you're looking for is human and able to be responsible.
If you're looking for cheap, that's what you'll get is cheap.

The only experience I've had with writing services has been terrible. The ones I've used provided one or two quality articles at first, then submitted spun articles that made no sense. They wanted payment upfront and I was left with 10 useless articles.
