How One Tweak To Your Sales Copy Converts 30% Better

Interesting case study on how one little tweak to your sales copy can improve your conversation rate.
Quote:
...You can have the ugliest, most basic website in the world. But as long as you’ve got words on a page it can still convert visitors into customers...

...You can invest in design (2x more expensive, plus a higher time cost) or video (10x more expensive, plus a time cost there as well), or you can focus your energies on perfecting your messaging by testing different… words.

Of course, poor design will cost you an incalculable amount of sales. But, assuming your design is at a “decent,” minimum usable level, optimizing your wording is the most practical place to start...

Awesome article. I took notes on it while I read it, here are my notes in case you're interested:

- Tweak your words first, focus on design second.

- Small tweaks to copy can have a massive impact, especially in main heading and subhead

- Try split testing these copy techniques in headlines/suheads:
--- Minimize perceived risk (30-day free trial)
--- Emphasize ease and saving time (sign-up takes less than 60 seconds)
--- Call to action (pick a plan to get started)

- That all distills into this pricing page formula:
--- Risk reversal or emphasize “free” + Time and effort risk reversal + Call to action statement

- Determine the right objections to address with your risk reversal by:
--- Emailing potential prospects
--- Adding a chat widget to your site
--- Add a survey popup tool
--- Showing an exit detection pop-up

- Base your split tests on real world data. (not off the top of your head)

- Split testing resources:
--- Google Experiments (free)
--- Visual Website Optimizer
--- Optimizely

Observations about how this article was written:

- Stories grab attention. Start your copy with them.

- In your copy, promise to answer a question, but first, provide helpful into. This keeps them reading for the answer and builds trust when you give them value (and then answer their question)

A couple of good blogs on the same topic:

- Unbounce (they're all about landing pages and A/B tests)
- CrazyEgg
- KISSMetrics

And as for the copy, there are tons of great blogs about copy, like CopyBlogger, but there's one, which I recently discovered. It talks about mostly copywriting and even goes deep into the psychological side of great copy. Some useful info, especially for someone, who recently discovered that it's all about the copy now.

EDIT: the blog I was talking about is at Writtent.com
