I do not follow keyword density and don't think you can put a general % on keyword density. As long as it is readable for viewers and doesn't appeared to be stuffed, it should be fine.

I would agree with comment. 'Keyword stuffing' isn't a good practice. The more organic you make them, the more likely that Google will pick them up.

Hey Maja,

I can't give you a definitive answer, or support the one I'm about to give you, and I'm not sure anyone can. However, based strictly on my personal experience and without any formal experiments to confirm it, I thought I saw a drop for some of my pages when my keyword density approached 5% and a bounce back when I approached closer to 3%.

The threshold at which I felt there was a negative impact was much lower than I thought it would be. I felt that I was writing "naturally". So, now I do check form time to time and try to tweak my keyword density down towards 3%.

Take that for what it's worth.

It's entirely possible that there was some other factor, one having nothing to do with keyword density, that explains what I saw. It could be that G's algo has changed. Might be that acceptable keyword density is dependent on the over all number of words, location, subject or other factors.

Keyword density has been discussed a number of times here already. Please search the forums.

On a final note, here is what Matt Cutts had to say about keyword density:
What is the ideal keyword density of a page?

What is the ideal keyword density: 0.7%, 7%, or 77%? Or is it some other number? Matt Cutts, Bay Area, California
